Hand & Upper Extremity Surgeon

Dr. Maximilian A. Meyer is a fellowship-trained hand and upper extremity surgeon who specializes in the treatment of both acute injuries and chronic conditions of the fingers, hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow. Dr. Meyer understands the tremendous impact that hand and arm problems can have on patients’ lives. His treatment philosophy centers on listening to and working together with patients to create individualized care plans -both surgical and non-surgical – that help them return to an active lifestyle. Using the latest scientific evidence and advanced techniques, Dr. Meyer is dedicated to delivering outstanding orthopedic care with compassion every day.

A native of New England, Dr. Meyer graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in International Relations. He received his medical doctorate from Northwestern University. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program in Boston, MA and served as chief resident at Massachusetts General Hospital. He then completed his Hand & Upper Extremity fellowship at the University of Colorado, where he gained expertise in complex upper limb reconstruction, microsurgery, and the arthroscopic management of sports injuries. His clinical interests include upper extremity trauma (broken bones, ligament injuries, cartilage lesions, tendon lacerations, nerve injuries), arthritis, compression neuropathies, and small joint arthroscopy.

Dr. Meyer is passionate about improving health outcomes internationally and has participated in medical trips to Haiti, India, and Honduras. His research interests in this realm and other aspects of hand and orthopedic surgery have led to over 25 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals, as well as several book chapters. He has presented his research locally, nationally, and internationally. He is an active member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).

He speaks English, Dutch, and Spanish. In his free time, Dr. Meyer enjoys recreational sports as well as hiking, biking, and skiing in New England and beyond with his wife and two children.
