Dr. Michael Morwood Published in the Journal of Arthroplasty

Dr. Morwood was recently published in the Journal of Arthroplasty. Dr. Morwood, who specializes in knee replacements says, “One of the main causes of total knee replacement failure is micromotion of the implants.  This study was performed to see if the addition of a short stem extension onto the tibial component in a total knee replacement limits the motion of the implant.  We were able to show the addition of a short stem provides a significant reduction in micromotion during cyclic loading of a cementless tibial baseplate in a synthetic foam bone model, similar to a cemented implant.  The findings of this study may help lower the rate of tibial component loosening in total knee replacement.”

Dr. Sastry Leads MAKO Robotics Training at The New England Baptist Hospital

July 2020 – Dr. Akhil Sastry, Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon and provider at Atlantic Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine recently led a MAKO Robotics training at the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Sastry was the sole faculty member to facilitate the launch of their MAKO Robotics training program.

As robotic-assisted knee and hip replacement surgeries penetrate Boston’s most elite academic and fellowship programs, Portsmouth’s very own Mako Master Surgeon Akhil Sastry was selected to facilitate the launch at the New England Baptist, one of the most heralded institutions of orthopedics in the country.

To prepare for their first robotic knee surgery in a few weeks, Dr. Sastry trained a total of 8 surgeons in this one-time training session and has been invited back to provide additional training to another group of surgeons on August 6, 2020.

Dr. Sastry provided hands-on training and proctoring on how to perform this innovative and cutting-edge procedure. Dr. Sastry was not only one of the first surgeons to perform a robotic-assisted knee replacement in the world in 2017, in addition, he continues to teach and advance robotic concepts with joint replacements nationally. He has been selected to Chair these programs on many occasions and has trained over 100 surgeons from across the country.

New 1.5T Open MRI Available Now!

On June 30th, 2020, we will scan our first patient on a brand new 1.5T open MRI machine in Portsmouth, NH. This new MRI machine is one of few in the region that offers this level of detail and clarity, along with the largest field of view to create the most comfortable patient experience.

The state-of-the-art 1.5T GE Voyager is a 70 cm open MRI and is considered to be the gold standard for imaging. The machine comes fully equipped with new, innovative features including:

-MAVRIC software that allows imaging for patients with implants with no reduction in image quality. As more patients are receiving joint replacements, this is a terrific solution to improve the medical care that they need.

-A wider and more comfortable table design that sits lower to the ground, allowing for feet-first or head-first imaging. This features memory foam surfacing, is easier access for patient positioning, and accommodates up to 550 lbs.

-The open 70cm of headroom is the most comfortable patient experience without compromising imaging quality. 1.5T imaging is preferred by radiologists.

Dr. Akhil Sastry & Dr. Deeptha Sastry Provide PPE for First Responders

When COVID-19 started to impact the United States, our very own Dr. Akhil Sastry and his wife and Dr. Deeptha Sastry decided to partner with Dr. Robert Cho, and Ellen Bennett to help New Hampshire first responders. The Sastry’s voiced their concern about first responders not having enough personal protective equipment during this crucial time. Together they came up with an idea to make cloth masks. Ellen Bennett (founder of an apron business for restaurant employees) volunteered to help by using her manufacturing resources. Their goal was to ensure that first responders in southern New Hampshire communities were supplied with personal protective equipment.

We Are Open!

May 1st, 2020 COVID-19 Update

As we prepare to fully reopen at our Portsmouth location on Monday, May 4th, 2020 we want you to know that our primary concern is for our patients and staff’s safety and well-being.

That’s why we have elevated protocols in place to ensure everyone will be protected with COVID-19 compliance procedures. Of course, we are still offering Virtual Visits so you can be seen in the safety and comfort of your own home. And, we still encourage you to call us before visiting an urgent care center or the ER.

Although we are hopeful that the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is behind us, we continue to take the threat very seriously. With that in mind, we would like to share this important information:

-We are encouraging all incoming patients to wear a mask, but unfortunately we cannot provide them.

-Adjustments in our scheduling and foot traffic are in place to maintain proper physical distancing.

-Patient companions are discouraged from office visits to limit exposure opportunities. Family or friends will be instructed to wait in their cars. Thank you for understanding.

-Patients will be pre-screened for flu-like symptoms.

-The seating in our waiting area has been adjusted to foster physical distancing.

-We are taking measures to provide extra cleaning throughout the building including waiting room chairs, doorknobs, fitness equipment, handrails and bathrooms.

-All employees are wearing masks, frequently washing their hands, and avoiding touching their faces. Employees with flu-like symptoms will stay home and are encouraged to follow up with their primary care doctors.

-Our physical therapy affiliate, ProCare, will be operating with a limited schedule and proper protocols of their own to ensure staff and patient safety.

We hope you’re staying safe and if you’re suffering from aches and pains, remember that we are dedicated to you and hope to see you soon!
If you have any questions at all about an upcoming appointment, please do not hesitate to call us.
