In 2003, Orthopaedics Overseas (a division of HVO, Health Volunteers Overseas) awarded Dr. Crawford the prestigious “Volunteer Surgeon of the Year Award” in recognition of his extensive volunteer work in Africa, where he started an orthopedic teaching program for African physicians. He and his physician wife, Suzanne Abkowitz Crawford, MD, have been active with Health Volunteers Overseas for over 20 years, and have organized the collection and shipment of used medical equipment to hospitals in needy countries, including Haiti.
