Osteoporosis Screenings

What Is Osteoporosis?

The bones in your body are constantly breaking down and being rebuilt. Osteoporosis is a condition that occurs when your new bone growth cannot keep up with replacing old bone decay in your body. As the density and mass of the old bone decrease, your bone structures weaken, and the chance of a bone fracture increases. In severe cases, bones can become so brittle that even mild movement or gentle impact can result in fractures.

Osteoporosis Care at Atlantic Orthopaedics

Our goal is to help you live pain-free and to stop bone loss from changing your quality of life.

At Atlantic Orthopaedics, we’re experts in osteoporosis screening and treatment. Our providers can perform a bone scan to determine if your bones have become naturally thinner over time. We will also discuss your personal health history, family health history, lifestyle choices, and other factors that may be impacting your risk for developing osteoporosis or worsening any signs of existing osteoporosis. In all cases, we will help you understand the details of any diagnosis and we will work closely with other medical professionals, like Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapists, to develop and carry out an osteoporosis treatment program or osteoporosis prevention program that meets your near- and long-term needs.

There is no one defining factor to determine who will and won’t suffer from osteoporosis. There are however common risk factors related to osteoporosis. Common risk factors for osteoporosis that are out of anyone’s control include a family history of osteoporosis, aging, having a smaller body frame, being older and female, and being of white or Asian descent. Those who are managing eating disorders, calcium deficiency, hormonal or thyroid imbalances, or suffering from medical conditions like Lupus, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and more may also be more at risk to develop osteoporosis. Sedentary living, drinking alcohol in excess, and frequent tobacco use are also decisions that can impact your risk for osteoporosis.

If you find that your bones — especially hip, wrist, or back — are breaking or fracturing more frequently and easily than what is considered normal, this may a sign of bone loss. Other symptoms like back pain, excessive slouching, and shrinking are also indicative of the potential for mild to severe osteoporosis.

The amount of bone density your build in your youth (infancy to your late 20s) is critical to your body’s ability to constantly rebuild new bone as old bone breaks down. This, however, is not the only way you will prevent or reduce your risk for osteoporosis. The following is important.

  • Limiting alcohol
  • Quitting smoking
  • Improving nutrition and body weight
  • Increasing Vitamin D
  • Increasing Calcium intake
  • Exercising regularly

If you are suffering from mild symptoms of osteoporosis, treatment plans will focus on maximizing the positive impact of lifestyle choices directly related to your health, like diet and exercise.

If you are suffering from more severe symptoms of osteoporosis, treatment plans may include bone density medications or hormone-related therapy, and in critical cases, joint replacement surgery or spine surgery may be advised to replace or repair extremely fragile or at-risk bone and disc structures.
